I use the visual specifics of plants to create an abstract construction.  I work with an atypical format, either square or an exaggerated rectangle, where the eye ricochets around looking for engagement.

I work with layers of colored paper which are colored (mainly with colored pencil, but occasionally with paint), cut, attached to a base layer, then worked, layered and colored until they are woven into a whole. The shapes of colored paper create a heightened awareness of edge and form.  Each area possesses an equality of intention and attention.  The figurative image exists in a shallow space.  There is a tension between non-objective flatness and realism.

As natural and realistic as this work it is, it is also deeply abstract.  It depicts flowers and leaves, but it is not "about" flowers and leaves.
